Austin Abrams is hardly a stranger to film fans. Over the last decade, he has consistently stolen scenes in supporting roles across television and film—from Paper Towns and The Walking Dead to Euphoria, Do Revenge, and his standout turn in Zach Cregger’s thriller Weapons.
This fall, Abrams transitions from scene-stealing supporting player to a true, lead anchor. He is taking on a massive commercial risk by leading two wildly specific, high-concept genre films that test his ability to play an “everyman” thrust into terrifying, extreme circumstances.
First up is Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, hitting theaters on September 18, 2026. Coming off the massive critical and box office success of Barbarian and Weapons, the bar for Cregger’s next project is sky-high.
Instead of rehashing game protagonists whose stories fans already know by heart, Cregger crafted a grounded, pulse-pounding, R-rated survival nightmare set during the chaos of the Raccoon City outbreak. Abrams plays Bryan, an ordinary medical courier who unwittingly finds himself trapped in a non-stop, nightmarish fight for survival as a viral outbreak collapses the city around him.
The One-Man Survival Epic in ‘Whalefall’ (Oct 16)
If leading a $80 million Resident Evil reboot wasn’t enough to establish his leading-man credentials, Abrams follows it up just four weeks later with 20th Century Studios’ high-concept survival thriller Whalefall on October 16, 2026. We listed Whalefall as one of our most anticipated films for the rest of the year.
Directed by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You, Spontaneous) and co-starring Josh Brolin and Elisabeth Shue, Whalefall adapts Daniel Kraus’s hit novel. Pitching a concept best described as 127 Hours meets The Martian inside a 60-ton sperm whale, the story centers on Jay Gardiner (Abrams), a scuba diver who gets swallowed alive while searching for his father’s remains in the Pacific Ocean.
With an hour of oxygen remaining, the film relies almost entirely on Abrams’ physical endurance, vocal control, and emotional range to carry intense solo drama inside cramped quarters. If the marketing materials are any indication, Whalefall will offer a claustrophobic, visceral showcase of Abrams’ raw capacity as a dramatic actor.

While Inde Navarrette is capturing headlines for future Marvel developments, Austin Abrams is delivering the immediate theatrical goods right now.
